TEN MINUTES LATER, I was strolling through the lobby of my department.

“Morning, Andrea,” I said to the girl who functioned as our receptionist.

She looked up from filing her nails—something she seemed to do every second of every day—and gave me a bright smile. “Morning, Katie! You here to do some genius number crunching today?”

I rolled my eyes theatrically at her. “Another super exciting day of adding millions of numbers together, because what else could I possibly be doing with my time?”

She tittered happily and went back to her nails, and I reminded myself once again to talk to my boss about getting a receptionist who was even slightly interested in what our department did. I was positive Andrea was great at answering phones and forwarding calls, but if the department ever needed someone to stand in for a sick employee, the receptionist would be a great place to pull from.

Only if that receptionist, however, had any interest in handling more than her nails.

Hey, I was at Miller to help Adam figure out who was stealing money from him. There was no rule that said I couldn’t help him with some other inefficiencies at the same time.

And speaking of inefficiencies, the moment I got through the door and into our actual department, my supervisor, Jan, practically tackled me.

“Katie, thank goodness you’re here.”

I looked at her, somewhat concerned by this opening. “Why? Is everything okay?”

“I have an account that I can’t make heads or tails of,” she said, her voice hushed like this was some big secret. “Can you come take a look?”

I nodded and following her, still wondering what all the drama was about. When I saw the paperwork, though, I could see why she was so confused. We were looking at the spending account for Charles Ray—something that I’d just barely managed to get into, even with all my hacking experience—and the numbers were most definitely off. I took the stack of paper back to my desk, looking at it as I walked, and saw that there were a number of inconsistencies.

Namely, the expenditures didn’t match the list of prices from the vendors he was working with.

The expenditures weren’t larger, though, which was what I would have expected from this particular person—who was, after all, our prime suspect. If he’d been padding his expenses, making it look like he was spending more money on supplies than he actually was, I wouldn’t have been surprised.

In fact, that had been exactly what I’d been expecting to see.

But this was the opposite. Instead, the amounts he was spending were... less than the amounts the vendors should have been charging.

What in my Uncle Bob’s beard was going on here?
